After twelve months of a legal saga closely followed by internet users, the Beninese TikToker Méryl Djokouin, aka Coach Meryl Zeus, has regained his freedom. Released on bail by the CRIET several months ago but kept in custody for lack of payment of the required amount, he finally walked out of the civil prison on Friday, November 21, 2025, according to sources close to the case.

Arrested on November 13, 2024 on charges of “fraud via a computer system,” he first appeared on January 16, 2025 before the CRIET’s correctional chamber.

A year behind bars amid adjournments, bail and controversy

From his arrest, heavily covered on TikTok and shared across several platforms, the case drew public attention. Detained on suspicions of scams related to visa procedures for Canada, Méryl Djokouin pleaded not guilty. Investigators relied on material extracted from his phone by the National Center for Digital Investigations.

The absence of the main complainant, a pharmacy assistant, had in fact led to a first adjournment of the trial to March 6, 2025, so that he could be heard. Despite the decision to grant release on bail shortly thereafter, the influencer remained behind bars for several months, unable to pay the set amount.

At the heart of social networks, the case continued to fuel debates and controversies, between open support from some followers and fierce criticism from those who felt he exploited the gullibility of young people trying to emigrate.
