The controversy around Billboard is growing. On February 16, 2026, the US outlet resurfaced on X an article published in June 2025, in which Rema ranked sixth on a list titled « 25 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 21st Century. » At issue: his global hit « Calm Down, » boosted in particular by a remix with Selena Gomez.

In its analysis, Billboard argued that the Nigerian artist had failed to return to the Billboard Hot 100 after that collaboration, « although he placed six songs in the top 10 of the US Afrobeats Songs chart through June 7, 2025 ».

The resurfacing of the article triggered a flood of indignant reactions. Many social media users denounced what they called a reductive reading of Rema’s career, a leading figure of contemporary Afrobeats. « Rema keeps dropping hits, sells out venues, and put Afrobeats on the map worldwide. One chart placement doesn’t change any of that. Call a spade a spade », reacted @MikeAgrow.

« What is this denial? Every Rema song is a hit back to back », wrote @flourish_empire. Another user, @gtm_gtel, added: « They’re trying to destabilise him, but in vain. Billboard doesn’t get to dictate to Africans how to behave. Their rankings mean nothing. »

Beyond the controversy, the episode illustrates the growing sensitivity around the international recognition of African artists. Rema, whose influence extends well beyond a single hit, continues to establish himself as one of the most exported faces of the Nigerian music scene.
