Benin: Selection Test to Recruit 2,319 Primary School Teaching Assistants (AMEs)
To address the shortage of teachers for the 2025–2026 school year, the Beninese government has announced the organization of a selection test for Aspirants to the Teaching Profession (AMEs). This decision, taken during the Council of Ministers meeting on September 3, 2025, aims to strengthen the quality of teaching in primary schools.
The Beninese education system is facing an urgent need for 2,319 additional teachers to be deployed in order to maintain the standard of one teacher per class. With the current AME pool depleted, the government has decided to launch a new recruitment process.
According to the Council of Ministers’ report of September 3, 2025, candidates must hold either a Certificat d’aptitude pédagogique (CAP), a Certificat élémentaire d’aptitude pédagogique – primary teaching option (CEAP-EP), or a high school diploma.
These requirements are intended to ensure that future teachers have the minimum qualifications necessary to effectively guide learners.
Ensuring continuity and quality in education
The Ministry of Nursery and Primary Education stressed the importance of this measure for the smooth conduct of academic activities. The presence of one teacher per class remains a cornerstone for guaranteeing quality education to Beninese children.
The selection test therefore marks a key step in the government’s strategy to strengthen the AME framework. This system, established several years ago, has helped address the chronic teacher shortage in public schools while maintaining a functional academic environment.
