Odion Ighalo, former Nigerian international who notably played for Manchester United, expressed confidence about the outcome of the AFCON third-place match on Saturday against Egypt. According to him, the Super Eagles have what it takes to prevail and to save something from the campaign after their elimination in the semi-finals.

Nigeria will face the Pharaohs after their run was halted by Morocco, the host nation, at the end of a 4-2 penalty shootout. Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi had missed their attempts, ending Nigeria’s hopes of a final.

As a SuperSport pundit, Ighalo says this small final presents an ideal opportunity for redemption. “No one wants to play this match, but it’s always an opportunity to go home with a medal. I’ve experienced this in 2019,” he recalled. “Egypt will also want to redeem themselves after their defeat. But Nigeria must fight, win and give something to its supporters. It’s their last chance to salvage the campaign,” he concluded.

Beaten by Senegal (1-0) in the semi-final on a goal by Sadio Mané, Egypt will therefore face determined Super Eagles, while the final will pit the Lions of Teranga against the Atlas Lions.
