World Cup 2026: Fans reassured, tourist visas to the United States kept in place.
Despite a tightening of immigration restrictions affecting nearly 40 countries, the U.S. authorities and FIFA say that football fans will still be able to obtain tourist visas to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The U.S. government has assured that the recent visa restrictions will not impact supporters’ tourist visas who wish to attend major sporting events, notably the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite an immigrant visa ban affecting nearly 40 countries, the State Department clarified, in a directive addressed to its embassies, that competitions classified as ‘major sporting events’ are eligible for exemptions for athletes, coaches, and accredited staff.
These exemptions relate to the 2026 World Cup, the 2028 Olympic Games, and many major international events. Spectators remain subject to the usual rules, but FIFA has sought to reassure supporters, reminding that the ban does not affect tourist visas. Experts note that fans typically apply for B-1/B-2 visas, not covered by these measures. These assurances should ease concerns, especially in Africa, as the 2026 World Cup—co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico—draws near.
