Trump threatens to ‘annihilate’ Iran, Mahama calls for dialogue at the UN
The Ghanaian president asserted on Thursday that no civilization should be destroyed, two days after his American counterpart's ultimatum to Tehran. Without mentioning Donald Trump, he advocated for dialogue and respect for state sovereignty.
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama stated on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the UN General Assembly that “no human civilization deserves to be annihilated,” while advocating for dialogue to resolve crises. This statement comes two days after Donald Trump threatened to “annihilate the Islamic Republic” if no agreement was reached with Iran.
John Dramani Mahama did not mention Donald Trump or frame his remarks as a direct response. He added that a UN member state should not be destroyed and that even the most difficult disputes can be resolved through discussion.
In his own speech on September 22, the American president presented an alternative between an agreement allowing Iran to rebuild and the swift destruction of the Islamic Republic. The official address published by the UN echoed this threat.
The Ghanaian head of state also called for respect for sovereignty, the protection of civilians, and humanitarian access. He demanded permanent representation for Africa on the UN Security Council.
On the economic front, he requested long-term concessional funding for industrialization, human capital, and climate adaptation, asserting that Africa seeks a partnership of equals rather than charity.
