Ligue 1: Nuamah’s brace leads Lyon to 4-0 rout of Rennes, climbing to second

Olympique Lyonnais triumphed over Rennes with a commanding 4-0 victory on Saturday, September 19, at the Groupama Stadium, fueled by a brace from Ernest Nuamah in the first half. This win propels OL to second place in Ligue 1 with 11 points after five matches, just two points behind leaders Monaco.

Nuamah opened the scoring in the 7th minute following a move initiated by Corentin Tolisso, and he doubled the lead in the 30th minute with a quick transition finished inside the Rennes box. The Ghanaian thus gave Lyon a two-goal advantage before halftime.

After the break, Zachary Athekame extended the lead to 3-0 in the 48th minute. Tolisso then added the fourth goal in the 76th minute with a strike from the edge of the box, sealing Lyon’s largest victory of the season so far.

Rennes, who had previously recorded three wins and a draw in their first four matches, suffered their first defeat of the season and dropped to fifth place with 10 points. The Breton club had more possession but created few clear chances against a much more efficient Lyon side.

The match was briefly interrupted in the first half after an offensive banner was displayed in the stands. Players left the pitch for a few minutes before play resumed, but this incident did not alter the course of the match.

Lyon followed up this result just three days after their 2-1 victory against Anderlecht in the Europa League. In the league, OL now boasts three wins, two draws, and no losses after five matches.
