Winning the men's triathlon in 52 minutes and 56 seconds in Gamagori, Takumi Hojo has launched Japan's home campaign and secured a quota for Los Angeles 2028 during the opening of the Asian Games 2026.

Takumi Hojo delivered Japan’s first gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games on Sunday, September 20, by winning the men’s individual triathlon in Gamagori. The Japanese athlete finished with a time of 52 minutes and 56 seconds, nine seconds ahead of China’s Zhang Xirui.
Kazakhstan’s Arlan Zhanabay claimed the bronze medal, finishing six seconds behind Zhang. The podium was completed within a span of fifteen seconds, with Hojo leading, followed by Zhang and then Zhanabay.
The triathlon consisted of a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike ride, and a 5-kilometer run. Hojo exited the water in fourth place and completed the cycling segment in fifth before making his move during the running portion.
At 30 years old, Hojo had previously won gold in the mixed relay at the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games. His victory in Aichi-Nagoya also extends Japan’s dominance in the men’s event, marking a fifth consecutive win, according to Jiji Press.
This victory also secures Japan a quota spot for the triathlon at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, as reported by Olympics.com.
