Lens parts ways with Dino Toppmöller after just six matches

RC Lens has parted ways with Dino Toppmöller on Tuesday, September 15, just three months after his appointment and following six official matches in charge of the Sang et Or. The German coach, who was under contract until 2028, will not be on the bench for Friday’s match against Monaco.

The club and the 45-year-old coach mutually agreed to end their collaboration after discussions regarding the evolution of the squad and the organization of the staff, changes that Toppmöller reportedly did not support, according to Reuters. His two assistants are also leaving the club.

Yannick Cahuzac, who was previously an assistant, will take charge of the team for the trip to Monaco. The former Lens captain joined the staff this summer after a stint at Lorient.

Toppmöller’s record remains mixed. Lens won the Trophée des champions against Paris Saint-Germain and secured a 3-2 victory against Slavia Prague in the Champions League, but managed to win only one of their first four Ligue 1 matches.

In the league, Lens has one win, one draw, and two losses, placing them 10th. Their last outing ended in a 2-2 draw against Le Mans on Sunday, after they had been trailing.

Toppmöller succeeded Pierre Sage in June, who left for Crystal Palace after a season highlighted by the Coupe de France and a second-place finish in Ligue 1. RC Lens had hired him until 2028 with the aim of maintaining an intense and attacking style of football while managing the club’s return to the Champions League.

The next match for Lens is scheduled for Friday, September 18, against Monaco, where Cahuzac will lead the Sang et Or.
