Kenya: Thousands of supporters gather in Nairobi as Sifuna calls for opposition unity

Thousands of supporters of the opposition movement Linda Mwananchi gathered on Sunday, September 13, in Nairobi, following a day of mobilization led by Senator Edwin Sifuna. Addressing his supporters, the elected official urged the main opposition forces to unite ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The mobilization began with a visit to All Saints Cathedral in central Nairobi, before moving through several neighborhoods and markets in the capital. Crowds then converged on Jacaranda Grounds in the east of the city, where movement leaders spoke. AFP noted a strong police presence and described the gathering as largely peaceful.

Edwin Sifuna stated that defeating William Ruto would require coordination among the various components of the opposition. He specifically mentioned Kalonzo Musyoka and former Vice President Rigathi Gachagua as leaders he wishes to collaborate with, while reaffirming his intention to run for the presidency in 2027.

The rally brought together several political figures, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, MP Babu Owino, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, as well as several senators and MPs. The Linda Mwananchi movement has been conducting tours in various counties for several months to expand its political base ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The Nairobi mobilization occurs amid rising tensions surrounding political activities in Kenya. The day before, police announced restrictions in the central business district while stating they would ensure the safety of authorized activities. Organizers maintained their route to Jacaranda Grounds, where the main rally was scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

The official Linda Mwananchi website lists a series of rallies organized since February 2026, including a previous event in Nairobi on March 27. The movement presents itself as a platform for civic and political mobilization and continues its national tours ahead of the 2027 general elections.
