Sudan: British envoy calls for an end to the war and an inclusive dialogue

The president of the Sovereign Council of Sudan, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met on Saturday, September 12, in Khartoum with British special envoy Richard Crowder for discussions focused on halting the war and reviving a political process. The British diplomat emphasized the protection of lives and the cessation of humanitarian suffering as priorities.

According to the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Richard Crowder advocated for a dialogue led and owned by Sudanese people, within the framework of an inclusive and transparent political process that represents both domestic and international stakeholders.

The British representative also praised the initiatives undertaken by the relevant parties and the assurances provided by Sudanese authorities regarding the conditions for participation in the dialogue. He highlighted the destruction caused by the war, the displacement of civilians, and the concerns raised by international mechanisms regarding violations of humanitarian law.

This meeting follows several diplomatic consultations held in Khartoum. On September 9, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan received a delegation from the international mechanism of the Quintet, which includes the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, the Arab League, and IGAD, to discuss peace efforts and the political process.

Richard Crowder has served since September 2024 as head of the British office for Sudan and as the UK’s special representative for the country. London had previously indicated that its representative was to support efforts towards a political resolution to the conflict and the protection of civilians.
