Evil Genius: Courteney Cox revisits the ‘pizza bomber’ case in Toronto

Courteney Cox premiered her second feature film as a director, “Evil Genius,” at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, September 12. Starring Patricia Arquette and David Harbour, the thriller dramatizes the criminal case known as the “pizza bomber,” which occurred in Pennsylvania in 2003.

This world premiere marks the return of the American actress and director to the helm for a feature film, twelve years after “Just Before I Go.” The new film blends crime drama with dark humor, centered around a complex and tragic true story.

In August 2003, Brian Wells, a pizza delivery driver in Erie, was forced to participate in a robbery with a bomb strapped around his neck. The device exploded before bomb disposal experts could intervene, all captured on live television. The investigation later uncovered a criminal plot involving multiple individuals.

Patricia Arquette portrays Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong, who was convicted in this case, while David Harbour plays Bill Rothstein, a man connected to the conspiracy. “Evil Genius” particularly focuses on their dysfunctional relationship and the human motivations that led up to the tragedy.

Courteney Cox explained that she aimed to maintain the dark nature of the case while not erasing its absurdity. According to Reuters, the screenplay by Courtenay Miles seeks to strike a balance between tension, drama, and moments of humor.

The film is part of the TIFF 2026 selection. No commercial release date or distributor had been announced at the time of its presentation in Toronto.
