Bundesliga: Mönchengladbach parts ways with Eugen Polanski after three defeats

Borussia Mönchengladbach parted ways with head coach Eugen Polanski on Sunday, September 13, 2026, following a winless start to the Bundesliga season. The club has suffered three consecutive defeats, including a heavy 5-0 loss to Freiburg on Saturday.

According to Reuters, the management decided to terminate Polanski’s contract with immediate effect. The 40-year-old had been in charge since September 2025 and was confirmed to continue after the 2025-2026 season.

Mönchengladbach began the new campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Leipzig, followed by a 4-3 loss to Elversberg, and then the 5-0 setback against Freiburg. The club has conceded twelve goals in its first three matches and currently sits at the bottom of the table.

Sporting director Rouven Schröder had declined to guarantee Polanski’s position after the debacle in Freiburg. The change comes as the club seeks to quickly halt this negative streak in a Bundesliga where Bayern Munich had already dropped points in the previous matchday.

Jan-Moritz Lichte, former coach of Mainz, will take over on an interim basis. Mönchengladbach is set to host Mainz on September 19 for the fourth round of the Bundesliga.
