Egypt: Sissi calls on Iran to de-escalate at BRICS summit

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi called on Iran to contribute to de-escalation in the Middle East during a meeting with Masoud Pezeshkian in New Delhi on Sunday, September 13, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit. The Egyptian presidency stated that he advocated for a sustainable peaceful resolution.

The Egyptian head of state reaffirmed Cairo’s support for efforts aimed at restoring regional stability. He also emphasized the need to end any aggression against Arab states, invoking the principles of good neighborliness and the protection of the interests of the populations.

The meeting comes as the situation in the Middle East is a significant topic of discussion at the New Delhi summit. Egypt is also seeking to promote a resumption of discussions between Tehran and Washington. On Sunday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty also advocated for a return to negotiations and for diplomatic solutions to prevent an extension of the conflict, according to Arab News.

Abdel Fattah al-Sissi is participating in the BRICS summit held on September 12 and 13 in the Indian capital, where he is engaging in multiple bilateral consultations. His meeting with Vladimir Putinspecifically addressed nuclear, industrial, and commercial cooperation between Egypt and Russia.

Masoud Pezeshkian also met in New Delhi with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The two officials discussed efforts to reduce tensions and prioritize diplomatic solutions in the region.
