Ethiopia-Russia: Trade has tripled, Putin invites Abiy Ahmed to Moscow
Addis Ababa and Moscow aim to expand their bilateral cooperation in security, economic, academic, and technological sectors following a meeting between their leaders at the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between Addis Ababa and Moscow on Saturday, September 12, in New Delhi. Their discussion, held on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, focused on defense, security, trade, investment, education, and technology.
Vladimir Putin described Ethiopia as a longstanding and reliable partner of Russia in Africa. According to a statement released by the Kremlin, he noted that bilateral relations continue to progress based on the principles of equality and mutual benefit.
Abiy Ahmed indicated that the two leaders explored ways to expand educational exchanges, cultural ties, and cooperation on climate and development, particularly in relation to COP32. The Ethiopian leader also took the opportunity at the summit to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss defense, critical minerals, clean energy, and investments.
Economically, Putin stated that bilateral trade had more than tripled in 2025 and continues to grow. He also mentioned that over 20,000 Ethiopian citizens have studied in Russia, an aspect that Moscow presents as a significant foundation for cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting took place during the BRICS summit held on September 12 and 13 in the Indian capital. Ethiopia has been a full member of the group since January 2024. In New Delhi, several African BRICS members also supported a collective call for restraint in the Middle East.
Additionally, the Russian president invited Abiy Ahmed to the third Russia-Africa summit, scheduled for October 28 and 29 in Moscow. The two leaders are expected to hold another bilateral meeting there, according to the Russian report.
