Ivory Coast: Yan Diomandé officially joins Real Madrid

“Real Madrid and RB Leipzig have reached an agreement regarding the transfer of player Yan Diomandé, who commits to our club for the next seven seasons, until June 30, 2033,” Real Madrid announced in a statement. The amount of the transaction was not specified by the Merengue club.

According to Spanish media, this operation would make Diomandé the most expensive player in Real Madrid’s history. The young winger would notably surpass Jude Bellingham, Eden Hazard, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Gareth Bale in the club’s highest transfer rankings.

At 20 years old, the native of Abidjan is also presented as the most expensive African player in history. The reported amount would place him well ahead of Cameroonian Bryan Mbeumo, signed by Manchester United, and would confirm the significance of the Ivorian international in the European market.

A Highly Sought-After Offensive Profile

Yan Diomandé comes off a particularly notable first professional season with Leipzig. He scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists, while also shining with Côte d’Ivoire during the 2026 World Cup.

Considered one of the great hopes of current football, the winger has also distinguished himself with his effectiveness in dribbles. Real Madrid is betting on his qualities to strengthen their offensive line and prepare for the future of their attack.

Paris Saint-Germain had also expressed interest, alongside several other major European clubs. A source close to the case indicated to AFP at the end of June that the Parisian club was negotiating with Leipzig before discussions stalled due to the requested amount and the associated salary demands.

Real Madrid ultimately won the bidding after several weeks of negotiations. The Spanish club, a two-time Champions League winner in 2025 and 2026 according to the provided information, agreed to pay a considerable sum to secure the services of the young Ivorian.

Sixth Madrid Signing of the Transfer Window

Diomandé is the sixth signing for Real Madrid since the start of the transfer window. He joins Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva, Spanish full-back Marc Cucurella, French defender Ibrahima Konaté, Dutchman Denzel Dumfries, and Spanish forward Carlos Espi.

He is expected to occupy the right side of the Madrid attack, alongside Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior. He will be working under José Mourinho, returning to the Real Madrid bench thirteen years after his first stint at the club.

Spotted early by several European scouts, Yan Diomandé had trials at Chelsea, Crystal Palace, and Bournemouth but failed to secure a contract. His journey then took on a new dimension with his arrival in Spain.

Just weeks after signing with Leganés, the player learned of the death of his younger sister Roxane, aged 15, after she had been unknowingly drugged. The tragedy occurred right after his first match in La Liga, played against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, and Diomandé spoke about this ordeal during the 2026 World Cup.

Leipzig Forced to Let Go of Their Young Talent

The sporting director of RB Leipzig, Marcel Schäfer, had stated in June to the daily Bild that the club wanted to keep Yan Diomandé for the following season. This intention did not prevent the departure of the Ivorian, but it did signal to potential suitors the level of financial demands of the German club.

Diomandé was still under contract with Leipzig until 2030. He has 14 caps and three goals with Côte d’Ivoire.
