Ivory Coast: Guéla Doué sidelined for several weeks due to calf injury
Bayer Leverkusen has announced that Guéla Doué will be sidelined for several weeks due to a right calf injury. The defender is included in the Ivorian squad for matches against Ghana, Somalia, and Cameroon.
Guéla Doué will miss several weeks of competition following a muscle injury to his right calf, Bayer Leverkusen announced on Wednesday, September 16. Injured during training ahead of the Europa League match against NK Celje, the 23-year-old Ivorian defender’s participation in the opening matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers is now in serious doubt.
An MRI conducted on Wednesday afternoon confirmed the injury. The German club stated that their full-back would be unavailable “in the coming weeks,” without providing a specific return date.
Ivory Coast is set to face Ghana on September 24 at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké, followed by a match against Somalia on September 29 in Abidjan. Guéla Doué is among the defenders included in the 25-player squad announced by Hervé Renard for these first two qualifying matches.
The player joined Leverkusen from Racing Strasbourg just before the transfer window closed. Sky Sport Germany reports the transfer, valued at around 30 million euros excluding bonuses, as the club’s most significant summer signing.
The Ivorian defense was already facing several absences at the time of the squad announcement. The CAF noted that Wilfried Singo and Amad Diallo are also unavailable for this gathering due to injuries.
After the matches against Ghana and Somalia, the Elephants will play a friendly against Cameroon on October 3 at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpé.
