Ivory Coast: Seko Fofana retires from international football…at 31 years old
At 31 years old, Seko Fofana announced this Monday his decision to end his adventure with the Ivorian national team. African champion in 2023 at home, the midfielder leaves the Elephants with a major continental title and strong memories.
A page turns for Seko Fofana. The Porto midfielder has announced his international retirement, bringing an end to an adventure marked by several significant appointments with Côte d’Ivoire. At 31 years old, the former RC Lens player chooses to pass the baton to the new generation. The pinnacle of his journey in the Ivorian jersey will undoubtedly be the victory at the CAN 2023, held at home and won in February 2024. Fofana played an important role in the Elephants’ journey, contributing to their conquest of a third continental title.
In a message posted on his social media, the Ivorian international explained this decision with emotion and gratitude. “It is with pride and much appreciation that I had the chance to fight for my country,” he notably wrote. The player especially cherishes the memory of a dream come true: lifting the Africa Cup in front of his home crowd. “ Winning the most beautiful trophy on the continent is a childhood dream that has come true for me,” he shared.
Fofana also wanted to thank his teammates, the staff, and the supporters for their support over the years. Despite his departure, he assures that he will continue to closely follow the performances of the Elephants. “ I will always be the Elephants’ number one supporter ,” he stated, before sending a message of encouragement to the young players called to take over: “ There is no shortage of talent among us.” After making history with the Ivorian national team, Seko Fofana thus leaves the international stage on a symbolic note: that of an African champion passing the baton.
