Benin: Louis Vlavonou reacts to death of former mayor Joseph Akpata

It was with “deep sadness” that the President of the National Assembly announced the death of Joseph Akpata in a solemn statement. In this official statement, posted early in the evening on his Facebook page, Louis Vlavonou paid tribute to the memory of “a man of culture, a loyal spirit, and a discreet but effective champion of the promotion of our intangible heritage.”

A career of dedication and loyalty

A respected former mayor of the Ifangni commune, Joseph Akpata had joined President Vlavonou’s cabinet as technical advisor, where he put his expertise at the service of Benin’s cultural development.

His career was marked by unwavering loyalty to republican values, professional rigor praised by his peers, and a rare ability to combine closeness with the population with strategic vision.

“A man of the field and of the people, he left his mark on our institution through his constant availability,” said President Vlavonou. Joseph Akpata’s passing leaves “an immense void throughout the parliamentary community and that of Ifangni,” he stressed.
