The Super Eagles threaten to boycott the Algeria–Nigeria clash over unpaid bonuses (media)
A few hours before their quarter-final against the Fennecs, Nigerian players and staff would have refused to travel to Marrakech, denouncing the non-payment of their bonuses since the start of the tournament.
The Super Eagles are going through a turbulent spell on the eve of their AFCON 2025 quarter-final. Players and members of the coaching staff would have refused to travel to Marrakech because of the non-payment of their match bonuses. The information was revealed by BBC Africa journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently in Morocco. Nigeria must face Algeria on Saturday night in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final.
According to the same sources, the bonuses for the four matches already played have still not been paid. Eric Chelle’s men have nonetheless put in a solid run so far, with wins over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in the group stage, followed by a convincing 4-0 win over Mozambique in the Round of 16.
In light of this situation, the players would have decided to suspend their travel and training sessions until the bonuses issue is resolved, casting doubt over the readiness for the showdown with the Fennecs.
