Benin: Léandre Houngbédji clarifies his political commitment and indicates his party
The Deputy Secretary General of the Beninese government and executive spokesperson, Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji, has officially revealed his political affiliation. During a recent public appearance, he confirmed his membership to the Progressive Union for Renewal (UPR), one of the key parties of the presidential majority.
“My first party is Benin. But I am a member of the UPR,” he stated, putting an end to speculation about his partisan positioning.
The UPR, led by Joseph Djogbénou, emerged from the merger of the Progressive Union and several allied groups, including the Democratic Renewal Party (PRD). This large political group currently holds the parliamentary majority and is the primary supporter of the reforms initiated by the Rupture regime.
While some figures, such as the former president of the National Assembly Adrien Houngbédji, are increasingly distancing themselves from the ruling coalition, Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji opts for clarity and affirmation. This official alignment marks a new stage in the journey of this former journalist, who entered the government circle as a communications director before assuming the role of spokesperson.
