African Union-India: Ndayishimiye and Modi seek to reschedule India-Africa summit

Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, the current chair of the African Union, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed on Sunday, September 13, in New Delhi, the swift rescheduling of the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit, which is set to take place alongside the BRICS summit.

The two leaders presented the partnership between India and the African Union as a cornerstone of cooperation among developing countries. They mentioned holding the upcoming India-Africa Forum at a date that suits both parties.

This fourth edition was originally scheduled to be held in New Delhi from May 28 to 31, 2026. India and the African Union had decided to postpone it following consultations regarding the health situation in certain parts of the continent and the desire to ensure full participation from African leaders.

Sunday’s meeting also addressed the relations between New Delhi and Bujumbura. Discussions covered economic cooperation, development projects, agricultural modernization, health, and capacity building.

Narendra Modi praised the African Union’s efforts in combating the Ebola epidemic, while Évariste Ndayishimiyeexpressed gratitude to India for its medical support to Africa CDC. In his remarks at the summit, the Burundian leader also advocated for strengthening ties between Africa and the BRICS, particularly in infrastructure, energy, and water resources.

The two officials finally recalled the African Union’s entry into the G20 as a permanent member in 2023 during India’s presidency of the group, a point discussed during their meeting in New Delhi.
