AFCON 2025: CAF opens an investigation into the Nigeria–Algeria match incidents.
Clashes involving Algerian players and supporters broke out after the defeat to Nigeria (0-2) in Marrakech on Saturday, pushing CAF to launch an investigation.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the opening of an investigation following the serious incidents that occurred after Nigeria’s victory over Algeria (2-0) in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal, held in Marrakech.
According to Africa Soccer, the continental body is currently reviewing the referees’ reports, security officials’ reports, as well as those of the media representatives present on site. On the field, the Super Eagles had secured their qualification for the semi-finals thanks to goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams scored in the second half.
At the final whistle, however, tension abruptly rose another notch. Furious, the Algerians vehemently contested certain refereeing decisions that they deemed unfavorable. Players reportedly tried to attack referee Issa Sy and his assistants, forcing security to intervene to prevent a major flare-up.
Disorder was also reported in the stands, where Algerian supporters allegedly tried to breach the security barriers and damaged some of the stadium’s facilities. CAF is expected to rule in the coming days on possible disciplinary sanctions.
