Women’s Champions League: Arsenal clinches victory in the 93rd minute
Mariona Caldentey unlocked a match that had been tightly contested at Meadow Park, securing the Gunners their first three points of the 2026-2027 European campaign.
Arsenal had to wait until the third minute of stoppage time to overcome HB Køge (1-0) on Tuesday, September 22, during their opening match of the Women’s Champions League. Mariona Caldentey converted the decisive penalty.
The Londoners struggled for long stretches against goalkeeper Alberte Vingum despite dominating possession. Kyra Cooney-Cross and Frida Maanum had chances in the first half, and a corner from Smilla Holmberg hit the crossbar after the break. Leah Williamson also narrowly missed the target.
The breakthrough finally came in stoppage time. Substitute Selina Cerci was brought down in the box by Yukina Sakabe. Caldentey converted the penalty, allowing Arsenal to kick off their European campaign with a 1-0 victory.
This win gives the Gunners three points after the first day of the league phase. Arsenal will travel to Paris FC on September 30 for their second European fixture.
