Senegal: Pape Thiaw on track for a contract extension and a salary increase after the continental title.
Crowned Africa’s champions at the 2025 AFCON, head coach Pape Thiaw is set to have his contract extended and his salary increased, a decision embraced by Senegal’s sports authorities in light of the objectives achieved.

Senegal is about to secure the future of its head coach. Crowned with the continental title won at the 2025 AFCON, Pape Thiaw should see his contract extended and revalued. This is, at least, the promise made Thursday by the Minister of Sports, Khady Diene Gaye, to the Senegalese coach. Aged 44, Pape Thiaw has led the Lions of Teranga to a second African crown, four years after the first, confirming the solidity of the sporting project in place. A success that fully aligns with the objectives set upon his arrival, among which also included qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Already rewarded with a bonus of 50 million CFA francs as well as the allocation of a plot on the Petite Côte, Pape Thiaw should soon sign a new deal accompanied by a salary increase. The Minister of Sports confirmed this direction at a press conference. « If there is a possibility of increasing the coach’s salary? Yes, I affirm it here. He has fulfilled his objectives by qualifying the team for the World Cup and by winning AFCON. You don’t change a winning team, do you? So we will try to continue with him. (…) We will revisit the initial contract», said Khady Diene Gaye to the local press.
The minister recalled that the coach’s contract included a particularly stringent results clause. « There was a clause in his contract, which was not only to reach the CAN final, but to win the cup. As we aspire to be the first African country to win the World Cup, we must place our coach in optimal performance conditions, so that he can have peace of mind, that he does not have money worries or daily concerns (laugh)», she added. With this announcement, Senegalese authorities clearly show their intent to rely on stability, by backing a coach who has met expectations and carried high the ambitions of the national football team.
