Parakou: A two-year-old child tragically dies after falling into a well in Albarika
The Albarika neighborhood, in the first district of Parakou, was shaken this Thursday, July 10, 2025, by a heart-wrenching tragedy. A barely two-year-old child tragically lost his life after accidentally falling into an unsecured well.

According to initial eyewitness accounts collected on the spot by Fraternity, the little boy was playing alone in the yard of the family home. No adult was watching him at that exact moment.
The alarm was raised by a visitor who, intending to say goodbye to the child, could not find him anywhere. Anxiety then struck the household. After long minutes of search, the grim discovery was made: the little body was lifeless at the bottom of the well.
The emergency services, alerted urgently, could only confirm the irreparable. The child was already dead at the time of extraction. The burial took place the next morning, Friday, at the Parakou Catholic cemetery, in an atmosphere heavy with grief and consternation.
This tragedy revives the debate about the securement of wells in residential areas, particularly in homes where young children live. A simple solid cover, a safety fence, or a grill around the well might have been enough to prevent the irreparable.
This tragic event calls for a collective awareness, not only among families, but also among local authorities about the urgency to impose minimum safety standards for all domestic wells still in use.
