Kampala, 737 traders selected for 20 billion shillings in aid

The Ugandan government has selected 737 traders from Kampala to receive a total of 20 billion shillings following the floods in October 2025 that destroyed goods and damaged several commercial buildings. Payments are contingent upon a final verification.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja announced on September 15 that the list was compiled after a verification conducted by the Internal Security Organisation. The names will be displayed in the affected buildings so that traders and the public can report any discrepancies.

Robinah Nabbanja stated that this final phase should be completed within two weeks, ahead of the disbursement of funds to eligible beneficiaries. More than 2,000 traders had initially reported suffering losses.

Discrepancies between the various lists of affected traders had delayed the distribution of aid, as traders had been demanding the fulfillment of the government’s promise for several months.

On April 29, the Office of the Prime Minister announced that 20 billion shillings had been allocated to support traders affected by the floods around the Nakivubo canal. The government then established a committee to harmonize the lists and verify the records before any disbursement.
