Cairo 2026: Brigitte Tchédé wins silver in discus for Benin
The representative from the University of Parakou has reached the continental podium in the discus throw, finishing behind South Africa's Minon La Grange.
Brigitte Tchédé secured the silver medal in the women’s discus throw at the 12th African University Games held in Cairo. The athlete, competing under the name Tchédé Nonvignon Brigitte and representing the University of Parakou, finished second in the continental competition.
The podium saw South Africa’s Minon La Grange from the University of Johannesburg take first place. Brigitte Tchédé claimed the second spot ahead of Egypt’s Noor Mohamed Ibrahim Khalil from the University of Alexandria.
The women’s discus event was scheduled for Sunday, September 13. This medal marks Benin’s presence on the podium of continental university athletics, in an edition that brings together universities from several African countries in the Egyptian capital.
Brigitte Tchédé arrived in Cairo with a national record of 47.40 m in the discus, set at the national championships in Benin in August 2025. A few days later in Accra, she also won the West African title in the discipline with a throw of 42.35 m, as well as gold in the shot put.
The African University Games Cairo 2026 are taking place from September 8 to 16. This edition features over 2,000 participants from 81 universities and higher education institutions across 17 African countries, according to data provided by the Egyptian authorities.
