Kenya: 60 billion shillings, Lake Victoria road project to start in November
The Kenyan government plans to launch in November the first phase of a 612 km corridor around Lake Victoria, aimed at connecting five counties in the western part of the country.
The Kenya government plans to launch the first phase of the Lake Victoria Ring Road in November 2026, a 612 km road corridor connecting five counties in the west. President William Ruto announced a budget of 60 billion shillings for this initial phase.
The route will connect Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Migori around the Kenyan basin of Lake Victoria. The project aims to enhance the movement of people and goods in a region where trade, fishing, and cross-border exchanges play a significant role.
Treasury Secretary John Mbadi stated that the funding relies on the World Bank. According to announcements made in Kisumu on September 13, the necessary resources for the first phase have been secured, and construction is set to begin in November.
The communicated specifications include a seven-meter-wide roadway with two-meter shoulders on each side, particularly for pedestrian and cyclist access. Fiber optic infrastructure is also planned to be installed along the corridor.
The project has been under discussion for over a decade. The Kenya National Highways Authority had already initiated design and supervision procedures for certain sections of the Lake Victoria Ring Road, including the Masara Muhuru Bay segment.
