Uganda’s Ituka solar plant begins operations for 192,000 households
The Ituka solar plant, with a capacity of 24 MWp, has begun commercial operations in West Nile. The project is expected to produce nearly 54 GWh annually, supplying the grid with electricity equivalent to the consumption of over 192,000 households.

The Ituka solar plant has commenced commercial operations in the Madi Okollo district of northwestern Uganda, AMEA Power announced on September 14, 2026. With a capacity of 24 MWp, the facility is now supplying electricity to the national grid through the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited.
The developer estimates that the plant will generate approximately 53,940 MWh of electricity annually, equivalent to the consumption of over 192,640 households. AMEA Power also estimates that the project will help avoid around 26,600 tons of carbon emissions per year, with a total project cost of $27 million.
The transition to commercial operations follows the energization in July of a 25 MVA substation at 132/33 kV. This infrastructure enabled the completion of reliability and performance testing prior to the start of electricity delivery to the grid.
The project is led by Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, a Ugandan company owned by AMEA Power. The Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund provided approximately $19 million in senior debt to finance the plant, with AMEA Power contributing the equity. Electricity is sold to UETCL under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Ituka becomes the first independent solar producer in West Nile and the independent power project with the largest installed capacity in the region, according to AMEA Power. The plant also marks the group’s first operational solar asset in Uganda.
