Houègbo: over 50 kg of counterfeit medicines removed from the market
A large quantity of counterfeit and prohibited medicines was removed from circulation on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, in Houègbo, in the commune of Toffo, in the Atlantique department.
The operation was carried out by officers from the local police station while the market was in full swing, under the watchful eyes of traders and customers.
In total, more than fifty kilograms of pharmaceutical products of dubious origin were seized. The batch included tablets, syrups and powders, packaged without regard for health standards and offered for sale as ordinary consumer goods. Presented as remedies, these substances guarantee neither effectiveness nor safety, exposing consumers to major health risks.
This intervention once again highlights the persistence of the illicit trade in medicines in local markets, where often vulnerable populations turn to these products for lack of accessible alternatives.
Law enforcement reminds that the sale of counterfeit medicines is a serious offence, severely punished by law.
While this seizure is a heavy blow to informal networks, the authorities stress that the fight against this phenomenon remains a long-term struggle. In Houègbo as in other localities in the Atlantique, protecting public health depends on constant vigilance and regular actions on the ground.
