Antoine Semenyo will not play on Thursday against Ivory Coast in Bouaké. The Manchester City forward has withdrawn from the Ghana squad ahead of the opening match of the CAN 2027 qualifiers due to an ankle issue.
The 26-year-old is suffering from a swollen ankle, according to 3Sports. MyJoyOnline reports that Semenyo has requested to be excused from the international window to continue his recovery from a persistent problem. The duration of his absence has not been specified.
This absence further limits Carlos Queiroz’s options. Mohammed Kudus had already opted out of the squad to focus on his fitness. The Ghana Football Association has announced nine reinforcements due to medical uncertainties within the group, including Brandon Thomas-Asante, Mohammed Fuseini, Benjamin Tetteh, and Felix Afena-Gyan in attack.
Ghana will face Ivory Coast on September 24 in Bouaké, followed by a match against Gambia on September 29 in Accra. Semenyo had been in good form, having scored a brace and provided an assist in Manchester City’s 5-3 victory over Sunderland on September 20.
