Nigeria: 15 killed in Kebbi as residents flee after communal clashes

At least 15 people, including the traditional chief of Lafagu, have been killed in communal clashes in Kebbi State, northwestern Nigeria, according to multiple Nigerian media reports. Residents have fled the area to seek refuge in Bagudo amid heightened tensions.

Local press reports link the violence to a cycle of attacks and reprisals involving members of the Fulani and Kambari communities. The police have yet to provide a detailed account establishing responsibility for the fatalities.

The traditional chief of Lafagu, Alhaji Saidu Mujeli, is among the victims. The Kebbi State police confirmed his death on Sunday and announced several arrests. A family member stated that his residence was set ablaze before he was taken by the assailants.

Kebbi State Police Commissioner Umar Muhammad Hadejia later reported that six suspects had been apprehended in connection with the violence. He also mentioned the deployment of security forces in the area and a relative return to calm as the investigation continues.

Governor Nasir Idris acknowledged the loss of life and population displacements in Lafagu and Buya. He stated that his administration is working with security services to identify those responsible and to create conditions that would allow residents who abandoned their homes, fields, and livelihoods to return safely.

Kebbi State is located in northwestern Nigeria. According to official state government data, it shares an international border with Niger to the north and with Benin to the west.
