Burkina Faso recognizes 315 martyrs and 10 disabled individuals, opening rights for their families
Two decrees adopted on Thursday grant national status to 325 individuals. The ten disabled individuals will benefit from free public transportation and healthcare, while the affected minor children will become wards of the Nation.
On Thursday, September 24, 2026, Burkina Faso officially recognized 315 individuals as martyrs of the Nation and ten others as disabled individuals. The Council of Ministers adopted two decrees in accordance with the law of June 10, 2022, which governs these statuses.
The ten individuals recognized as disabled will receive free public transportation and healthcare, psychosocial support, and their minor children will be cared for as wards of the Nation, according to the government report.
For the 315 martyrs, the measures include provisions for their minor children, who are also recognized as wards of the Nation, psychosocial support for the beneficiaries, and coverage for transportation and burial expenses.
The government links these recognitions to recent political, social, and security events. However, the statement released after the Council did not provide the names of the beneficiaries, details of the events considered, or a timeline for the implementation of the various support measures.
