Benin’s army: several senior officers promoted to higher ranks
Several senior officers of the Benin Army have been promoted to new ranks during the extraordinary Council of Ministers meeting held on Friday, December 26, 2025.
This decision aims to strengthen the military hierarchy and to recognize the commitment of certain officers in the service of national defense.
Among the promoted officers are prominent figures of the Benin Armed Forces. General Bertin Bada, director of the military cabinet of the President of the Republic, saw his promotion endorsed by the government, as did General Fructueux Gbaguidi, Chief of the General Staff of the Benin Armed Forces.
General Abou Issa, a member of the high command, as well as Colonel Dieudonné Djimon Tévoédjrè and Colonel Francis Gomina, have also been elevated to higher ranks.
These promotions come as part of a restructuring and consolidation of the armed forces, a few weeks after the December 7, 2025 coup attempt.
They are part of measures taken by the government to recognize the responsibilities and efforts of military officers in safeguarding the constitutional order and the country’s security.
The official ceremony for the conferment of insignia and new prerogatives is expected to take place soon, according to indications from the Ministry of Defense. Authorities stressed that these promotions are in line with current laws and that they contribute to strengthening the cohesion and efficiency of the military institution.
