DRC: Fighting displaces over 70,000 people to Walikale
Over 70,000 people have fled to the Walikale territory in North Kivu since mid-August due to intensified fighting in eastern DRC. The UN warns of the pressure on basic services and humanitarian access.
More than 70,000 people have been forced to leave their homes since mid-August, seeking refuge in the Walikale territory of North Kivu due to escalating fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the UN reported on September 18.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the displacements are linked to hostilities in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. The rapid arrival of thousands of families is putting pressure on basic services and host communities in Walikale.
Insecurity is also hindering civilian movement and complicating humanitarian organizations’ access to affected areas. The UN is urging the conflicting parties to protect civilians and ensure safe, sustainable, and unhindered access to aid.
The UN humanitarian coordinator in the DRC, Damien Mama, visited Masisi in North Kivu on September 18 before continuing to Goma. His discussions with humanitarian organizations focused on civilian protection, access constraints, and the need for increased assistance.
The United Nations describes host communities as already heavily burdened. The influx of new displaced individuals adds further pressure on essential services as insecurity continues to restrict aid delivery.
