Real Madrid crowned U20 Intercontinental champions with 3-1 victory in front of 52,117 fans

Real Madrid claimed their first U20 Intercontinental Cup by defeating Santiago Wanderers 3-1 on Saturday, September 19, at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The final, contested between the champions of the UEFA Youth League and the Copa Libertadores U20, attracted 52,117 spectators, setting a record for a youth match according to UEFA.

Daniel Yáñez opened the scoring with a free kick in the first half, following the expulsion of Alexander Dubó from the Chilean side. Santiago Wanderers equalized shortly after the break through Christian Silva, but the Madrid side pulled ahead in the final ten minutes.

Fran Santamaría, who came on just before the end, restored Real’s lead in the 81st minute. Roberto Martín then added a third goal in stoppage time, marking the last action of the match. Santiago Wanderers finished the final with eight players after three expulsions.

This victory marks the first title for the Madrid youth academy in this competition, which was established in 2022. Real Madrid becomes the second European club to lift the trophy, following Benfica, who won the inaugural edition.

The attendance of 52,117 surpasses the previous record of 45,656 set in 2025 at the Maracanã during the Flamengo-Barcelona final. This 2026 edition was also the first U20 Intercontinental Cup held in Europe.

The title caps an exceptional season for Real Madrid’s Juvenil A, who have already won the league, the Copa de Campeones, and the UEFA Youth League. Álvaro López’s team thus concludes their campaign with four major trophies.
