World Cup 2026 (Q): “Ghana can compete with England and Brazil”, Ernest Thompson
A few months before the World Cup 2026, former Black Stars official Ernest Thompson shows unchanged confidence. According to him, Ghana has the tools to compete with the world’s top football nations, provided they show discipline and tactical rigor.

Former member of the Black Stars’ governing committee, Ernest Thompson, expressed optimism about Ghana’s chances at the upcoming World Cup 2026, saying the Ghanaian squad has the qualities needed to challenge football powers like England or Brazil.
Guest on Sporty FM, the former secretary of Hearts of Oak’s board of directors gave a confident assessment ahead of Ghana’s fifth appearance at the global tournament. The Black Stars qualified last October after a convincing qualifying campaign, reigniting hopes of a run reminiscent of 2010.
“Ghana can stand up to some of the best nations in the world,” Thompson said, while specifying some preferences: “I wouldn’t want us to face Spain, Portugal, Belgium or perhaps France. But England doesn’t bother me. It’s a special relationship: the former colonizer and his subject who wants to prove his worth. We learned football from them, and I believe we can win.”
Returning to the rivalry with Brazil, Thompson believes the Black Stars now have what it takes to compete with the Seleção, provided they adopt the right tactical approach. “Brazil play football similar to ours, based on technique and creativity. In 2006, we lost 3-0 because we defended too high. Ronaldo took advantage. It all depends on discipline and the game plan.”
Confident, the former official believes in a strong showing from the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup: “With good preparation and tactical discipline, Ghana can take on any team and reclaim its status as a major nation in African football.”
