World Cup 202: Carlos Queiroz expected this week in Ghana

The new Ghana head coach, Carlos Queiroz, is expected this week in Accra for his official presentation, as preparations accelerate ahead of the 2026 World Cup. A seasoned coach who has previously led Portugal and Egypt, Queiroz has signed on for a short-term mission, with the aim of guiding the Black Stars at the World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

His nomination comes after the departure of Otto Addo, dismissed following worrying performances in warm-up matches. The Ghanaians had notably suffered a heavy defeat to Austria (5-1), before losing to Germany (2-1). The Ghana Football Association did not delay in reacting by entrusting the reins of the national team to Queiroz, whose official presentation is expected to take place in the presence of sports authorities, including the Minister of Sports.

Freshly appointed, the new head coach will quickly dive into the heart of the matter with friendlies scheduled for early June against Mexico and Wales. Placed in Group L, the Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama, before facing England and Croatia. With solid experience in major competitions, Queiroz will have the mission of reviving a national team seeking redemption after disappointing runs in the 2014 and 2022 editions.
