UCL: Wesley Sneijder lights up Arsenal – Atlético Madrid
Very critical after the Champions League semi-final, Wesley Sneijder judged the level of play to be insufficient, going so far as to mock an intervention by UEFA to shorten the match.
A former Dutch international, Wesley Sneijder did not mince his words after the Champions League semi-final second leg between Arsenal and Atlético Madrid. Very critical of the quality of the match, won 1-0 by the Gunners thanks to a Bukayo Saka goal, Sneijder felt that the level on display was well below the standards expected at this stage of the competition.
On Ziggo Sport’s set, the former playmaker even delivered a remark to say the least radical: « After 35 minutes, I thought UEFA should have intervened. The match should have been stopped, the two teams sent off, and Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain sent straight to the final », he said, in an ironic tone.
In his analysis, Sneijder pointed in particular to Atlético’s overly cautious approach, which would have left the initiative to Arsenal. « I expected it: they backed off, lost the ball, and Arsenal took control of the game », he added. Harsh words that illustrate the former player’s disappointment with a fixture that did not live up to its promises on the spectacle front.
