Tehran threatens prolonged response against U.S. bases in case of new attack

Iran warned on Sunday, September 20, 2026, that a major new attack by the United States or its allies would trigger a prolonged response against American bases and interests in the region. The Iranian military command claims to have information suggesting that a new offensive is being prepared, without specifying its source or providing public evidence to verify this claim.

In a statement relayed by state media, the Khatam al-Anbiya central command warned that U.S. positions could be targeted by “sustained, effective, and painful” strikes in the event of a new attack against Iran. It also indicated that regional countries participating in any potential U.S. operation would be considered parties to the conflict.

The U.S. Department of Defense had not immediately responded to the Iranian claims regarding the preparation of an offensive. However, Washington had issued a new security alert for the Middle East the day before, citing a risk of unpredictable escalation, airspace closures, and disruptions to air traffic.

The Iranian warning comes amid an already tense regional context. The Houthis in Yemen, supported by Tehran, have claimed responsibility for strikes against Riyadh and Saudi installations. Saudi Arabia announced the interception of a ballistic missile launched toward Riyadh, while other attacks have been reported against the kingdom’s infrastructure.

Tensions also affect the region’s major energy routes. Iran continues to condition the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz on adherence to the terms it attributes to the interim agreement reached in June, while Houthi advances in Yemen enhance their leverage around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stated on Sunday that Tehran intends to pursue both confrontation and negotiations to defend its positions and consolidate any potential diplomatic gains.
