Manchester City beats Sunderland 5-3 to maintain perfect record

Manchester City defeated Sunderland 5-3 on Sunday, September 20, at the Etihad Stadium, preserving a perfect record after five matches in the Premier League. The leaders withstood a hat-trick from Brian Brobbey.

Enzo Fernández opened the scoring for City before Brobbey equalized for the first time. Rayan Cherki restored the lead for the Manchester side, but the Dutch forward from Sunderland leveled the match again.

Antoine Semenyo then scored twice to put City ahead 4-2. Brobbey completed his hat-trick, bringing Sunderland within one goal, before Erling Haaland sealed the score at 5-3 late in the match.

Brobbey’s hat-trick is the first by a Sunderland player in the Premier League since Jermain Defoe in 2016. The visitors even threatened to equalize at 4-4, with Rúben Dias notably clearing a ball off the line.

Manchester City now has 15 points from 15 and remains at the top, three points ahead of Arsenal, who lost 3-0 to Brighton on Saturday.
