Niger: Algeria explores Bilma oil after Kafra

Algeria and Niger are continuing to expand their oil cooperation by evaluating new blocks, including Bilma. This topic was among the key points discussed during recent exchanges between the two countries regarding hydrocarbons.

The Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons visited Niger with officials from Sonatrach to oversee joint projects with the Nigerien Oil Company, Sonidep. The discussions focused on the Kafra project and the examination of other oil areas that could be integrated into this cooperation.

The Bilma block is already undergoing preparatory work in Niger. In Agadez, authorities organized a workshop in September dedicated to the waste management plan related to the exclusive research authorization for this block, as part of the contract established between the Nigerien state and Sonidep.

Expanding energy cooperation

Sonatrach and Sonidep have strengthened their partnership in recent months. In June, several memorandums of understanding were signed in the areas of seismic acquisition, data processing, and oil services. In August, the two companies began exploration work on the Kafra permit.

The cooperation has also taken on a commercial dimension with the first shipment of Nigerien crude oil jointly marketed by Sonatrach and Sonidep from the Sèmè terminal in Benin in August 2026, as well as the first deliveries of Algerian Jet A1 fuel to Niger.
