At the UN, Mauritius urges France to resolve the Tromelin dispute
Dhananjay Ramful reaffirmed on September 26 that the island is part of Mauritian territory. The co-management agreement signed in 2010 has still not been ratified in France.
Mauritius’ Foreign Minister, Dhananjay Ramful, called on France to resume constructive dialogue regarding the sovereignty of Tromelin on Saturday, September 26, during the UN General Assembly. Port-Louis claims sovereignty over the island administered by Paris.
In his address in New York, the Mauritian diplomat stated that “Tromelin Island is an integral part of the territory of the Republic of Mauritius.” He urged France to seek a resolution in the “spirit of friendship” between the two countries, according to a speech broadcast by the UN and reported by several Mauritian media outlets.
This request revives a long-standing issue that has been open for several decades. Tromelin, located in the Indian Ocean, is administered by France, while Mauritius asserts its claim to sovereignty.
Paris and Port-Louis signed an agreement in 2010 to establish a co-management arrangement for the island and its maritime spaces, without resolving the sovereignty question. However, the French Foreign Ministry indicates that the ratification process has not yet been completed in France.
