Benin: Algeria seeks to strengthen military against asymmetric threats

Algeria has offered to share its operational expertise and enhance the training of the Beninese Armed Forces in response to asymmetric threats. The proposal was made on September 24, 2026, in Cotonou by Algeria’s ambassador, Ammar Hadjar, during a meeting with the Minister Delegate for National Defense, Gildas Agonkan.

Discussions focused on training, skill development, and the potential for further structuring military cooperation between the two countries. The Beninese side expressed interest in sustainable support based on Algeria’s experience in combating armed groups.

Gildas Agonkan specifically advocated for framework agreements that could encompass defense policy and interoperability of forces. No date for signing an agreement has yet been announced.

Cotonou is expanding defense partnerships

This Algerian offer comes as Benin is strengthening its ties with several military partners. In recent weeks, authorities have also engaged in discussions with the United States, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates regarding training, equipment, and enhancing operational capabilities.

Benin is facing armed attacks in its northern region, near the borders with Burkina Faso and Niger. The government has been seeking to bolster the human, technical, and logistical resources of the forces deployed in this area for several years.
