Morocco: 27 parties campaign for the legislative elections on September 23

The campaign for Morocco’s legislative elections on September 23 officially began on Thursday, September 10. Twenty-seven parties are competing to renew the 395 seats in the House of Representatives, according to the official portal of the Kingdom dedicated to the election.

The campaign will continue until midnight on Tuesday, September 22. Voters will cast their ballots the following day through direct universal suffrage, using a list voting system, under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior and the Constitutional Court.

The election will see the three parties of the current governing coalition—namely the National Rally of Independents, the Authenticity and Modernity Party, and the Istiqlal Party—face off against the main opposition forces. The stakes are to determine the new majority in the House of Representatives and, ultimately, the formation of the next government.

The electoral sequence is framed by new provisions on election transparency and political communication. The Moroccan official site also indicates that more than 3,000 observers are to be mobilized. The issue of personal data processing and artificial intelligence had already been subject to specific rules prior to the legislative elections.

The campaign takes place in a climate marked by discussions on regional inequalities, youth unemployment, and purchasing power. These themes hold significant importance in the programs and speeches of the parties as the vote approaches.

The official schedule provides for the announcement of provisional results starting from September 24.
