In Senegal, the ‘damp’ returns to wellness centers

In Dakar, the ‘damp’, a traditional massage long associated with pregnant women, new mothers, and babies, is regaining popularity in wellness centers. The Senegalese Press Agency reported on September 10 that this practice, passed down through families, is now being offered to a broader clientele.

The treatment involves manual techniques and, according to practitioners interviewed by APS, the use of oils or plant butters such as shea, palm kernel oil, or touloucouna. The protocols vary depending on the individual, their habits, and the products accepted by the client.

In Dakar, this revival of the ‘damp’ is also part of the growing trend in relaxation and body care services. APS specifically mentions the Revival center in Almadies, which collaborates with a practitioner specialized in this traditional massage.

However, discussions surrounding this practice emphasize the need to distinguish between wellness and therapeutic claims. The therapeutic benefits asserted by some practitioners do not replace a medical diagnosis or follow-up, particularly during pregnancy or after childbirth.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that massage can be performed during pregnancy, particularly for relaxation. The organization recommends informing the practitioner of the pregnancy and favoring a side-lying position rather than lying on the stomach.

Clinical guidelines from NHS Borders also remind that massage should be avoided in certain situations, including skin infections, wounds, bleeding, a history of deep vein thrombosis, or obstetric complications requiring special monitoring.

For pregnant women, ACOG advises consulting a professional trained in prenatal massage and to disclose their pregnancy even if it is not yet visible.
