Central African Republic: controversy after a serious tanker truck accident in Bangui

The accident occurred in Bimbo, a commune located southwest of the Central African capital. In a report released on the evening of Saturday, August 8, the authorities announced the death of eight people and the treatment of about ten injured.

This toll remains provisional and could evolve, specified government spokesperson Evariste Ngamana. However, several witnesses as well as victims’ relatives reported at least twenty deaths, although this estimate has not been officially confirmed.

The government announced the opening of an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident and to establish any possible responsibilities. It also plans to strengthen road safety measures.

Technical inspections and the circulation of heavy goods vehicles in question

According to Quentin Ngbouando, coordinator of the civil society platform I Gwé, the accident could be related to a technical problem affecting the air intake system of the truck. This hypothesis will need to be verified by the investigation announced by the authorities.

The association leader believes that fuel trucks should undergo rigorous mechanical inspections before each trip. He also calls on the state to better enforce traffic regulations, particularly in urban areas and on routes connecting the provinces.

Quentin Ngbouando further advocates for regulations governing the hours of operation for heavy vehicles. According to him, these vehicles should primarily operate late at night or early in the morning to limit traffic jams and risks in Bangui. He finally urges drivers and other road users to adhere more closely to traffic rules.
