In Gabon, enrollment for digital driving licenses suspended three days before deadline
The administration aims to assess the system launched in March. It must also distribute 6,993 licenses that have already been issued and has not communicated any date for resumption.
The Gabonese Ministry of Transport suspended new enrollments for digital driving licenses on Monday, September 21, just three days before the expiration of the six-month deadline set for converting old licenses. This interruption, described as temporary, aims to allow for a comprehensive assessment of the system.
The measure does not prevent the collection of cards that have already been produced. The National Center for the Editing and Issuance of Transport Documents holds 6,993 licenses that their holders are invited to retrieve. The ministry also promises to process the applications of individuals who have enrolled but have not yet received their licenses.
The ministerial communication, as reported by Gabonese media, does not specify whether the moratorium is extended during the suspension, nor the regulations applicable to drivers who have been unable to complete the conversion. It also does not provide a date for the resumption of enrollments.
The new license was launched on March 24 in the Greater Libreville area. Authorities had granted six months for holders of old licenses to convert them, indicating that after this moratorium, the old documents would cease to have legal value. The initial deadline was set to expire on Thursday, September 24.
