Cape Verde: After 25 Deaths in Fogo, the State Audits the Road and Considers Limiting Heavy Trucks

A team from Estradas de Cabo Verde is to examine the route and propose measures to reduce risks on this mountain road.

The audit focuses in particular on the area where the vehicle left the roadway before falling into a ravine approximately 30 meters deep. Authorities are considering the installation of side barriers as well as new traffic regulations adapted to the particularly steep characteristics of the route.

Among the options under consideration is a restriction, or even a ban, on the passage of heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks on certain sections. However, exceptions could be made for emergency or disaster situations.

The accident occurred on Saturday, September 5 on the route between Chã das Caldeiras and Campanas de Cima. The official toll reports 25 dead and 14 injured. Thirteen people remained hospitalized on Tuesday, according to the crisis office. The majority of the victims were children and teenagers returning from an excursion, according to information gathered by the authorities and relayed by the Associated Press.

An investigation into the causes remains open

The exact circumstances of the tragedy remain to be determined. Initial local reports mentioned a possible tire failure, but no definitive conclusion has yet been announced by the authorities. The excursion had been organized privately by the bus driver, who himself died in the accident, and not by the schools in the area.

The government has declared two days of national mourning in tribute to the victims. The authorities have also mobilized emergency services, medical teams, and a support system for the affected families.

The assessment launched this Tuesday must now determine the priority improvements to be made on the Chã das Caldeiras road and specify any possible traffic restrictions. The expected conclusions should help to enhance the safety of a route regularly used to reach the volcanic area of Pico do Fogo.
